Readiness and recovery. The same word, different things.
If you have worn two different devices, you have probably noticed that they disagree — and that they disagree using vocabulary that sounds like it should be standardised. It is not. Neither *readiness* nor *recovery* is a defined measurement with an agreed method behind it.
This page explains the territory both words point at, shows how several companies actually use them, and is careful not to tell you which one is right. That question does not have an answer, and pretending otherwise is how terminology turns into marketing.

Neither word is a standard
There is no professional body that defines readiness, no consensus statement that fixes what a recovery score must contain, and no reference method either one is checked against. Recovery has a research definition as a *concept* — the balance between accumulated stress and the body's absorption of it — but that is a framework, not a formula, and it does not tell any company what number to print.
So when a device shows you a readiness score, it is showing you that company's answer to a question that has no standard answer. That is not a criticism. It is simply what the words are: product vocabulary, not measurement vocabulary.
The practical consequence is the one most people notice first. Two devices worn on the same body on the same morning can produce very different numbers under similar-sounding names, and neither of them is malfunctioning.
The territory each word points at
As a rough orientation — and this is a description of usage rather than a definition anyone is bound by — the two words tend to lean in different directions.
Recovery tends to look backwards. It usually describes how well the body has absorbed what has already happened: last night, last week's training, whatever else the last few days contained.
Readiness tends to look forwards. It usually describes what the day ahead can reasonably ask of you, which is a related but not identical question.
The lean is real but it is weak, and companies cross it freely. The clearest example is that at least one major product defines its readiness score explicitly in terms of recovery — so the two words are not only overlapping in practice, they are sometimes defined in terms of each other.
How the brands actually use them
Each of these is that company's own published wording, read on 8 September 2026. They are named here to say which product is being described and for no other reason. Nothing below ranks them, and where a company has not published a definition, this page does not invent one.
- WHOOP — Recovery
- WHOOP names Recovery, Sleep and Strain as its core scores and describes Recovery as a daily measure of how prepared the body is to perform, published each morning as a percentage. It publishes the signals it draws on, including heart rate variability, resting heart rate, sleep and respiratory rate, and it links Recovery to a recommended daily Strain.
- Oura — Readiness
- Oura's named daily Scores are Sleep, Readiness and Activity. What Readiness contains is not described here, because we could not confirm a first-party definition of it — and guessing at a competitor's method would be worse than leaving a gap.
- Garmin — Training Readiness, and two neighbours
- Garmin describes Training Readiness as a score plus a short message about how ready you are to train today, and names its inputs, including last night's sleep score, recovery time, heart-rate variability status, recent load and recent stress history. Separately it publishes Body Battery, described as an energy-reserve indicator, and Recovery Time, described as how long remains before the next hard workout.
- Polar — Nightly Recharge
- Polar describes Nightly Recharge as an overnight recovery measurement showing how well the body has coped with overall stress — and is explicit that the stress in question can come from work, family, relationships, environment and lifestyle as well as from training.
- Google Health — readiness score
- Google describes its readiness score as a daily snapshot of the body's recovery status, helping you understand how prepared you are for the day's activities. It is the clearest illustration on this page that the two words are used interchangeably: a readiness score defined as a picture of recovery.
Every product name on this page belongs to its owner and is used only to identify the product being described. None of this is an official or endorsed comparison, and Omnisio has no partnership, affiliation or certification arrangement with any company named here.
Why two numbers with the same name do not compare.
Look at the list above and the reason becomes obvious. One product's number is anchored to how hard you should train today. Another's is explicitly about stress from work and family as much as training. A third is a snapshot of recovery status wearing the word readiness. These are different questions, and they would produce different answers even if the underlying sensors agreed perfectly.
They also do not agree perfectly. Devices differ in where they sit, what they sample, and how much of the night they read well — and every one of these calculations is proprietary. The authors of the largest meta-analysis of consumer sleep-tracking accuracy named that as a real limit on interpretation: manufacturers' algorithms are undisclosed, so nobody outside the company can check how a number was reached. That applies to every company in this category, Omnisio included.
So a readiness score is not a unit. You cannot convert one brand's 72 into another brand's anything, and a number that fell by ten points on one device tells you nothing about what a different device would have said. What travels between devices is the direction of your own trend, and even that only roughly.
What the research underneath says
Whatever a product calls its number, the physiology it is reaching for is the same, and the evidence there is thinner than the confidence of the display suggests.
A joint consensus statement from the European College of Sport Science and the American College of Sports Medicine states that no single marker currently satisfies the criteria for diagnosing overtraining syndrome. A 2014 review in Sports Medicine, surveying the whole monitoring toolkit, found that very few markers have strong evidence supporting their use and that no single definitive marker has been described in the literature.
And a 2016 meta-analysis in Sports Medicine found something more specific and more awkward: in endurance-trained athletes, heart-rate measures moved in overlapping directions whether an athlete was adapting well or overreaching. The same signal accompanied two opposite states, which is why its authors concluded additional measures of training tolerance are likely to be needed.
That is the honest floor under both words. Neither *readiness* nor *recovery* is resting on a settled measurement, and a difference between two brands' numbers is not evidence that one of them has found the truth.
How to read either one sensibly
- Read your own trend, not the value. Whichever word your device uses, the direction across weeks is the part that survives all of the caveats above.
- Do not compare across brands. Two products with the same word on the screen are answering different questions.
- Do not compare across people. Nothing in this category is a ranking, and the underlying research explicitly notes variability between individuals in how they respond.
- Discount single days. Day-to-day variation in the underlying measures is large relative to the change you are being shown.
- Keep the reason, not just the number. A score with an explanation attached is usable. A score on its own asks you to trust an undisclosed calculation with no way to sanity-check it.
- Let how you feel outrank both. If the number and your body disagree for more than a day or two, the number is the weaker witness.
Which word Omnisio uses
Omnisio calls its morning reading Recovery, and defines it in the forward-looking sense: how much you have to give today. So by the rough distinction earlier on this page, Omnisio uses the recovery word for something closer to the readiness territory — which is a fair example of exactly the inconsistency this page is describing, and it would be dishonest to point it out in other companies and not in ourselves.
Two things about it are worth stating because they follow from the research above. It is read against your own recent weeks rather than against other people, and it arrives with a single instruction for the day and the reason that instruction was chosen — because a number without a reason is a number you cannot argue with. And on a night that could not be read honestly, there is no score at all.

Neither word is a medical term
Nothing in this vocabulary is regulated, and none of these scores is a medical output. Readiness and recovery scores do not diagnose, do not screen, and do not measure anything a physician would accept as a measurement.
Omnisio is a wellness product for general lifestyle use. Neither the app nor the devices used with it hold FDA, CE-MDR or TITCK medical device clearance, and nothing in it is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. As far as we can tell from their own published statements, none of the other products named on this page is presented as a medical device either — one of them says so in as many words.
So use whichever word your device prefers, read the trend rather than the day, and take anything that actually worries you to a physician.

Questions
Is readiness or recovery the better metric?
Neither, because they are not two competing measurements of the same thing. They are product names for overlapping ideas, defined differently by different companies, and at least one major product defines its readiness score in terms of recovery.
The question with an answer is whether the number your device gives you comes with a reason you can evaluate, and whether you are reading its trend rather than its daily value.
Why do my two devices disagree?
Because they are answering different questions with different sensors and undisclosed calculations. One may be anchored to how hard you should train, another to overall life stress, another to last night specifically.
That is expected behaviour rather than a fault in either device. What you can reasonably compare is each device against its own history, not one against the other.
Can I convert one brand's score to another's?
No. These are not units, and there is no reference measurement to convert through. A score is meaningful only inside the product that produced it.
The only thing that carries across is roughly the direction of your own trend, and even that should be read loosely.
Does a low readiness score mean I should not train?
It is one input, not an instruction, and the research underneath is genuinely ambiguous — a 2016 meta-analysis found heart-rate measures moving in the same direction in athletes who were adapting well and athletes who were overreaching.
How you feel, what your week has actually contained and how you slept are all evidence too. No consumer score is in a position to overrule all three.
